Newly postpartum mom, Kelly Howland, was innocently shopping in Target with her brand new baby when a woman approached her.
At first, the conversation was innocent enough, but as Howland writes on Facebook, it quickly headed in a direction that left her feeling sickened and disappointed.
The unnamed woman was definitely there with ulterior motives and Howland quickly discovered what that was. After general questions about her newborn daughter’s age and weight, the woman got straight to the point.
She boldly asked the obviously postpartum mother if she had heard of a new body slimming technique called It Works. The company sells weight loss and body shaping products that includes a product called the Ultimate Body Applicator, which is basically a cloth wrap for binding up cellulite.
“I knew what the company [It Works!] was and what their most famous products were for, and I was disheartened,” she told PEOPLE.
She decided to share her experience on Facebook, hoping to reveal just how far people in our culture are willing to go to further the perfect body stereotype. She writes:
“I don’t think I have to spell out for a single woman the cultural pressure that postpartum mothers face regarding their physical appearance. We know. We all know. She knew. And that’s why she approached me.”
“My body doesn’t need to be wrapped or squeezed or changed. It needs to be valued and revered for the incredible life it just brought into this world. THAT is beauty and THAT is all it needs.”
