Nearly 10 years after 3-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared from a vacation resort in Portugal, her former nanny is finally speaking out about her case.
According to The Daily Mail, one woman who watched Madeleine during the family’s vacation said she remembered hearing Kate McCann scream, “They’ve taken her!” on the night the little girl vanished.
The woman, who has not been named, reportedly looked after Madeleine several times before she went missing.
While speaking with The Mirror, the woman reportedly revealed that the resort where they were staying was said to be so unsafe that the nannies were instructed to carry around rape whistles.
The woman also criticized the Portuguese Police for mishandling Madeleine’s case.
“[Kate] was pacing up and down. The worst possible thing had just happened to her,” the woman said. “She was crying, but almost in a catatonic state, and Gerry was very distressed.”
“That’s the one thing I really remember from him, looking under the cars. I can’t forget that,” she added.
According to reports, the woman also claimed that investigators missed out on “whole chunks” of information and it took them 90 minutes to arrive at the scene.
She also said there was absolutely “no way” the McCanns could be involved in their daughter’s disappearance.
Madeleine’s regular nanny, Catriona Baker, then 20, had reportedly spent several hours with the little girl on the day she went missing.
While Baker was not with the McCanns when it was first announced that Madeleine had disappeared, she did join the search immediately after.
Police on Madeleine’s case were reportedly given more than $100,000 in a “last throw of the dice” after identifying a new “person of interest” last month.
In inside source claims this “person of interest” was said to be close by the 3-year-old before she vanished from the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz in 2007.
“There is just one person who detectives want to speak to, who was near the area where Madeleine disappeared almost ten years ago. An international search has been under way to find them,” the source said.
“This new suspect is believed to be Portuguese and was apparently seen near the Ocean Club, where Kate and Gerry McCann were staying with their children when Madeleine disappeared,” a new report in newspaper Correio da Manha added. “British police are understood to be preparing to question this new suspect.”
While the elusive new suspect may be a long shot, the McCanns have never given up hope that they may one day find their daughter—alive.
“They have never given up hope of finding out what happened to Madeleine, and believe she could be alive,” said a close friend of the couple. “They appreciate the Met Police’s help and know they are doing everything possible for a resolution.”
